Include Me TOO are delivering a free half day training to community groups and organisations in several areas across the country which will also provide a opportunity to discuss the role of Community Champions.

The half day training will support participants to:

• Develop an understanding of disability and the issues experienced by BAME families with disabled children

• Discuss and identify the importance of the role of the BAME community and faith sector in supporting families with disabled children access to information and support

• Increase understanding of what is changing and when for local BAME families with disabled children and young people aged 0-25 years. How the changes will affect children and young people with a range of needs and ages in special schools and mainstream schools.

• Listen to case studies and scenarios of the families journeys with a disabled child when they have needed information and support. How you can help to ensure disabled children, young people and their families access what they are entitled to.

• Increase awareness of your local offer to BAME disabled children and young people and their families.

• Increase awareness of how the changes will affect children and young people with a range of needs and ages in special schools and mainstream schools.

Include Me TOO produced a report in 2012 ‘Time for REAL Action’ which referenced over forty studies and research papers over a time span of 15 years highlighting very little has changed. Additionally IM2 consulted with organisations/groups supporting BAME disabled children and families consulted directly with families to identify key themes that were emerging and were still being experienced by them today these included:

• Poor access to information, advice and services.

• Inappropriate service provision which is not always culturally appropriate or holistic in meeting the needs of BAME disabled children, young people and their families.

• Lack of parents/carers knowledge of their rights and entitlements to support the development and needs of their disabled child(ren) and families

• Under representation of BAME parents and carers in process and structures of participation and representation to influence decisions.

There many changes to services taking place particularly the services and legislation regarding disabled children, young people and families.

Already BAME families with disabled children experience many inequalities as highlighted in ‘Time for REAL Action’ report.  We need to work together and support our families to understand the new changes and support their children’s dreams and goals for their future.

There is a role for the BAME communities which can strengthen the support and inclusion of the local disabled children, young people and their families in our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Families communities.
